1. Old Napoli elegance.

Alfonso was our host at what is possibly the best meal I have ever eaten, at lunch yesterday with the good people of Caccioppoli. I had been forewarned by Salva that this man is an artist with food, and an artist in how he delivers it, how he explains it. With a charicaturish flourish of his hands, Salva showed me the passionate delivery I was to expect when Alfonso described each dish. And he did move his hands in such a way, his words rolled like poetry, and he was possibly the most charming man I have ever met.

And he had an elegance of dress that Salva attributed to all older Neapolitan men - from Alfonso to Ambrosi senior to Rubinacci - a kinder Neapolitan look. Soft shouldered, but delicately so. Draped and full and generous, but subtle. Like beautifuloldclothes. Well worn and worn well.

And in grey pants. Only in dark grey pants, or so says Salvatore.
